Group the information you use for navigation, world awareness and performance. A purpose-driven layout is easier to maintain than a screen full of individually tuned values.
Change one category at a time
Small changes are easier to evaluate. After each adjustment, return to the game and check whether readability actually improved.
Keep a backup of useful settings
If you spend time building a preferred layout, back up the instance or its relevant configuration so an update does not erase your only copy.
